Summary of the article in JAMA 2010 by Samuel Cortese and F. Xavier Castellanos:
A recent study published on the prestigious Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) has reported hypothalamic abnormalities in adults with ADHD.
Dr. Cortese, child psychiatrist in Tours (France) and Prof. Castellanos (Director of Research, New York University Study Center, New York, USA) commented on this important paper in a letter to the Editor published on JAMA.

Dr. Cortese and Prof. Castellanos pointed out that the hypothalamic abnormalities may provide a neurobiological base for recently described but still overlooked somatic disorders co-morbid with ADHD, such as sleep and eating disorder and abnormal stress responses.
Dr. Cortese and Prof. Castellanos also underscored the potential treatment implications of this finding. For example, hypothalamic abnormalities may underlie the recently investigated amelioration of sleep onset delay in ADHD by melatonin (the endogenous form of which is regulated by the hypothalamus).
