International Day of Older Persons 2026 – Never too Old

On the 1st October 2026, ADHD Europe proudly joins the global observance of the International Day of Older Persons,

🌍 “The Age of Longevity: Rethinking Systems for Longer Lives”

As people around the world live longer, there is a growing need to ensure that those additional years are healthy, productive, dignified, and equitable for everyone. πŸ’™

For decades, ADHD was widely viewed as a condition affecting only children. Today, however, increasing numbers of adults and older adults are discovering that ADHD has been a lifelong part of their story. Many are seeking assessments and receiving diagnoses later in life, often after years of unanswered questions, struggles, or misdiagnoses. πŸ”βœ¨

πŸ€” Does Age Affect ADHD Recognition?

Important questions remain:

βœ… Are older adults less likely to be referred for ADHD assessments?

βœ… Are symptoms more likely to be overlooked, dismissed, or attributed to ageing?

βœ… Do healthcare systems adequately support adults and older adults seeking diagnosis and treatment?

βœ… How can we ensure equal access to ADHD assessment and support across the lifespan?

These questions are at the heart of today’s discussion as we explore how age impacts ADHD recognition, diagnosis, and access to support.

🧠 Why This Conversation Matters

Many older adults with ADHD have spent decades navigating life without understanding why certain challenges felt harder than they should. Receiving an ADHD diagnosis later in life can bring clarity, validation, self-compassion, and access to support. 🌻

As our societies age, we must ensure that healthcare systems evolve too. No one should be excluded from assessment, understanding, or support because of their age.

Together, let’s rethink how we recognise and support ADHD across the entire lifespan. 🫢

πŸ’™ Join the Conversation

As we mark the International Day of Older Persons, we invite healthcare professionals, researchers, policymakers, advocates, families, and individuals with lived experience to help create a future where ADHD is recognised, understood, and supported at every age.

Because it’s never too late to understand yourself. 🌟
